N401 Appointed Person Experienced Worker Test (EWT)

Course Objectives:

It is envisaged that at the end of this course the learner will be able to answer questions on and perform the following:

  • Have a basic understanding of the industry, the dangers of working in the industry & their responsibilities as an appointed person
  • Explain the duties & the responsibilities of: Crane / Lift Supervisor, Crane Operator, Slinger/Signaller, Crane Erector & Maintenance Personnel
  • Demonstrate & explain how to interpret & extract information on all relevant documentation including legislation, regulations, codes of practice that relate to all lifting operations & duties
  • Explain & identify the different requirements to be followed for the lifting of persons, a basic lift, standard lift, complex lift & additional requirements for lifting from height
  • Explain the notification process & the requirements for reporting procedures to authorities, utility bodies & any other parties if affected by the lifting operation
  • Identify different types of cranes, their capabilities & limitations for lifting
  • Explain the maintenance, inspection, thorough examination & testing requirements for lifting equipment & all accessories
  • Explain setting up, erection, levelling & dismantling requirements for diverse types of lifting equipment & lifts
  • Explain & demonstrate how to calculate point loadings & outrigger loadings, spreader mat types & sizes
  • Explain the function & use of the RCI, LMI & anti-collision systems & utilise the information provided
  • Demonstrate & explain the selection of the correct cranes for specified lifts including all accessories, ensuring correct duties charts, range diagrams & specification sheets
  • List & explain relevant information relating to different types of lifting accessories & explain their applications
  • Explain & demonstrate different slinging techniques, calculating sling sizes & angles, balanced & unbalanced, centres of gravity & loose loads etc
  • Identify weights & centres of gravity for various types of loads & specify appropriate lifting accessories for various types of loads
  • Demonstrate & illustrate different types of communication methods for lifting purposes & state
  • Explain the importance of completing a reflective report on a lifting operation
  • Identify & demonstrate how to & plan an area with exclusion zones for diverse lifting operations identifying any proximity/underground hazards from supplied plans & drawings
  • Identify & plan an area with exclusion zones for diverse lifting operations identifying safe access & egress before, during & after any lifting operation
  • Explain & identify the requirements for safe site access & egress for different types of lifting equipment
  • Demonstrate how to construct a safe system of work by producing risk assessments, method statements & lift plans with information supplied
  • Prepare & explain lift plan information to all personnel involved in lifting operations
  • Specify & explain positioning of the crane & load, identifying limiting factors & immovable obstructions that must be considered
  • Identify & explain how environmental factors outside the lift zone but within the surrounding area can effect planned lifting operations & the possible outcomes

On successful completion of the course, delegates will receive an NPORS card valid for 5 years, after which a refresher course can be undertaken.
