UKATA Asbestos Awareness for Groundworkers

Course Objectives:

The course has been designed to raise awareness and develop the knowledge of site based employees on the hazards and risks posed by asbestos containing materials (ACMs) within their everyday working environment and to provide an overview of the legislative measures in place to safeguard themselves and others affected by work activities.

On successful completion of the course, delegates will be issued with a UKATA Certificate.

Course Content:

On successful completion of the course delegates should:

  • Have an increased awareness of the nature and properties of asbestos and its effects on health
  • Be familiar with types, uses and likely occurrences of asbestos in buildings, and where appropriate, types of plant
  • Location of asbestos in buildings
  • Know how to avoid the risk from asbestos by understanding:
  • Where to obtain information on asbestos in premises prior to commencing work
  • Asbestos in soil origins
  • What to do if suspicious materials are found
  • How to use appropriate workplace precautions
  • Undertake work activities in a safe manner
  • Have an increased awareness of the nature and properties of asbestos and its effects on health
  • Understand unintentional and emergency contact procedures

Who Should Attend?:

Any persons who may encounter asbestos containing materials during their day-to-day work activities whilst undertaking groundwork activities.  This would normally include, but not limited to Site investigation engineers, utilities installation and maintenance engineers, ground works operatives – including ground drilling and manual excavations, fencing installation, on site remediation and waste disposal, or any other persons likely to disturb asbestos containing materials as defined in CAR 2012 and JIWG CAR-SOIL 2016.
