Deep Excavation Awareness

Course Objectives

The course will provide delegates with an awareness of all the key elements associated with Deep Excavation work.   It looks at the safety elements of ground support systems as well as considering the more practical aspects of working equipment such as ladders.  Delegates will also leave with an understanding of when an excavation becomes a confined space so that all health and safety matters are taken into consideration.

  • Alternatives to consider before deciding on deep excavation
  • Understanding the factors to take into consideration when deciding on required support
  • Suitable trench support systems
  • Side / edge loading and understanding the principles of ‘angle of repose’
  • Access and egress including correct use of ladders
  • The principles of working from a safe area as trench support is being placed
  • Edge protection
  • Service detection and service support
  • When excavations become confined spaces
  • Trench inspection and when this should be carried out

On successful completion of the course delegates will receive a Certificate of Attendance.

Those who are involved either in an operative or supervisory capacity, with deep excavation work.
