Course Objectives

The Installation and Maintenance EWA is the assessment process to recognise occupational competence for people who have been working in the electrical industry for over five years but haven’t been able to complete an apprenticeship or achieve an equivalent, recognised Level 3 vocational qualification.

Entry Requirements

The Installation and Maintenance EWA is an assessment process against the industry standard – it is not a shortcut to qualified status. To be eligible for the assessment you should have:

To complete you will need to:

Achievement of the Installation & Maintenance Electrician EWA and its assessment of competence—the AM2E—meets the criteria for an ECS  Electrician gold card application. It will be recognised in the Electrotechnical Assessment Specification as equivalent to the Installation and Maintenance Electrician apprenticeship.

Duration

With your assessor’s support, you can complete this qualification in as little as 6 months, however, this will depend on how readily you can generate the performance evidence that is required and whether you need to undertake any training to gain the required elements such as BS 7671:2018 or Inspection and Testing qualifications. This qualification must be completed within 18 months.

Eligibility Advice – Important Information for Candidates

Our guidance on eligibility for the Experienced Worker Assessment (EWA) is based on the current Electrotechnical Assessment Specification (EAS) Qualifications Guide, along with advice provided by TESP and NET. We always aim to give accurate, up‑to‑date information to help you understand what qualifications or experience may be required to meet the EAS technical competency requirements.

However, some learners hold historic or legacy qualifications that may still be accepted by certain industry schemes, even when those qualifications do not fully align with the EAS requirements. Individual schemes can apply their own rules and acceptance criteria, which may differ from EAS guidance.

Because of this, any advice we provide should be treated as guidance only.
We cannot accept liability if:

Where there is uncertainty about your qualification history, we may seek clarification from TESP.

Industry schemes make the final decision on qualification acceptance. We strongly recommend that candidates check directly with their chosen registration body if they wish to confirm the status or acceptability of historic qualifications.
